Bieleski lives in the town of Lajeado, which was badly hit by floodwaters from the engorged Taquari river. He blamed emergency services for the deaths of his wife and children, saying they had urged him to stay in his home to await help that never arrived. Rio Grande do Sul emergency services did not respond to a request for comment. He said he was worried thieves would ransack whatever belongings remained, and he now lives in his car.

SAO PAULO, Sept 6 (Reuters) - The death toll from heavy rains in southern Brazil rose to 36, local authorities said on Wednesday, as a tropical cyclone battered and soaked the region, flooding homes and swelling rivers. Video obtained by Reuters showed rising water flooding streets and rivers and submerging houses in the small town of Mucum, in Rio Grande do Sul state. Dominguez Fontana, a 74-year-old sawmill worker who escaped the Mucum flooding, said nothing could be salvaged. The Rio Grande do Sul floods are just the latest recent natural disasters in Brazil. More than 50 people were killed in Sao Paulo state this year after massive downpours caused landslides and flooding.

As of Friday night, Maquine, a municipality on the eastern coast, had received around a foot of rain, authorities said. SAO PAULO (Reuters) -The confirmation of more bird flu cases in South America raised alarm bells in Brazil, which remains free of contagion even after its close neighbors Argentina and Uruguay confirmed cases there on Wednesday. Until now, bird flu cases had been detected in commercial farms in Bolivia, which borders Brazil, and in Peru and Ecuador, Favaro said. On Wednesday, cases in wild birds were confirmed in Uruguay and Argentina, sparking a health emergency in both. In recent days, Brazil also investigated suspected cases of the highly pathogenic bird flu. It has never registered a bird flu case.
